Demand Slack for Building Permits

Mount Pleasant — Demand for permits to build single-family homes has fallen so sharply this year that the town might suspend a controversial program it began in 2001 to curb residential growth.

Town Council's Planning and Development Committee voted Monday to have Town Attorney Allen Young look into whether the home building permit cap could be halted temporarily until permit applications pick up.

The town allots a maximum of 620 single-family home building permits annually. This year, nearly 500 permits are still available. Last year and in 2005, demand for home building permits exceeded supply.

Town Administrator Mac Burdette suggested that it might be best to suspend the building permit cap program, originally designed to run uninterrupted through 2010. "It's doing nothing. It's a program that has no purpose at this time," he said.

For the current calendar year, the town has 479 available single-family home building permits, and 19 permit pending applications.
